Maine gives you about seven months to do twelve months of work, and everything about running equipment here follows from that. Frost goes deep, mud season shuts down hauling, roads get posted in the spring, and the building window closes early. A machine that goes down in July isn't just costing you a day — it's costing you a day you can't make up in January.
Then there's what's under the machine. Glacial till, cobble and boulders through most of the state, ledge close enough to the surface that half the excavation in southern Maine involves hammering rock somebody didn't budget for, and stumps and roots wherever the woods start. Add road salt through a long winter and ocean salt along the coast, and undercarriage here fails from corrosion as often as from wear.

We run a track press at our Maine branch, which means we're not only selling you components — we can do the work that turns them into a finished track:
- Shortening and lengthening chains — adding or removing links to correct pitch, adjust for wear, or adapt a chain to a different machine
- Pad and shoe swaps — pulling worn shoes off a serviceable chain and bolting on new ones, instead of buying a complete chain you don't need
- Building complete track groups — chain, shoes and hardware assembled and ready to install when it arrives
Portable Pin Presses
For fleets that would rather do their own undercarriage work, we sell portable track pin presses — master pin removal and installation, pin and bushing turns, and chain work in your own yard or at the landing. For an operation working woodlots hours from the nearest shop, that's often the difference between a half-day repair and a recovery.

Rubber tracks for mini and midi excavators, compact track loaders, multi-terrain loaders, dumpers and carriers.

- Tread patterns matched to the application — C-pattern and zig-zag for traction in mud and on slopes, block and staggered-block for CTLs on hard surfaces and turf

Cold matters here. Rubber stiffens in deep cold, and a track that gets run hard before it warms up is far more likely to crack or tear a sidewall. Worth knowing before you blame the track.

Maine ground is rock and roots, which means GET here is an impact problem more than an abrasion one. Rock and penetration tooth systems generally outlast general purpose, and frozen ground in late fall and early spring turns ordinary digging into an impact application whether you spec'd for it or not.
Built for Maine Conditions
The Short Season and Mud Season
Maine's building window is compressed, and everything expensive about equipment ownership here traces back to that. Spring thaw turns hauling roads to soup and posted roads limit what you can move. Machines either sit or work in conditions that punish running gear. Then the season opens and everything has to happen at once.
The practical consequence: downtime in Maine costs more than downtime elsewhere, because there's no slack in the calendar to absorb it. The flip side is that Maine gives you a genuine off-season. Measuring undercarriage in February and rebuilding then, rather than discovering the problem in July, is the single biggest cost lever most fleets here aren't pulling.
Deep Frost and Freeze-Thaw
Frost goes deeper here than almost anywhere in the country. Material packs into the undercarriage and then freezes solid, putting extreme load on idlers, recoil springs and track adjusters — a common cause of failures that get blamed on the component rather than the ice. Frozen ground turns ordinary excavation into an impact application, and repeated freeze-thaw cycling works at seals and joints all winter.
Salt, Coastal Exposure and Corrosion
Maine fights salt from two directions. Road salt and brine through a long winter attack chain joints, seal groups and pin and bushing seals. On the coast, ocean exposure does the same thing year-round to machines working waterfront, marine, pier and shoreline jobs.
Corrosion is a primary failure mode here, not a secondary one — a chain can be sound on material wear and finished on seals. Sealed and lubricated chain earns its cost in this market, and seal inspection should be on a schedule rather than triggered by symptoms.
Ledge, Boulders and Glacial Till
Bedrock sits close to the surface across much of southern and coastal Maine, and glacial till puts cobble and boulders in almost everything else. That's impact and abrasion at the same time — cracked rollers, damaged idlers, bent guards and chipped sprocket teeth rather than gradual wear. Heavy-duty gauge components and full-length guiding cost more up front and are consistently cheaper across the life of the machine.
Portland, Southern Maine and Coastal Construction
Sustained residential and commercial growth across Cumberland and York counties, plus the site work, utilities and infrastructure underneath it. Compact equipment dominates — mini excavators and compact track loaders working tight residential lots — which means non-marking tracks and bolt-on pads for finished surfaces, and high hours on machines that also travel constantly between short-duration jobs.
Coastal and island work adds its own problem: getting equipment to the job at all. When a machine has to be barged, a breakdown isn't a repair call, it's a logistics event.
Forestry, Timber and Land Clearing
The woods are still Maine's defining industry, and they're the hardest undercarriage application in the Northeast. Harvesters, forwarders, feller bunchers, skidders and mulchers work rocky, root-bound, steep and often wet ground, miles from a road and days from a parts counter.
This is where guarding stops being optional:
- Full-length track guiding to keep chains on the rails over stumps and side slope
- Rock guards and sidebar protection against direct impact
- Heavy-duty gauge rollers and idlers built for load rather than travel speed
- Forestry-spec shoes and bogie components
Stocking a spare roller or idler on site is cheaper than a recovery. We'd rather help you plan that than expedite it.
Aggregate, Gravel and Granite
Gravel pits, sand and aggregate operations, and Maine's granite quarrying keep loaders, excavators and dozers in continuous rock contact. High GET consumption and a strong case for heavy-duty gauge over standard.
Agriculture
Potato ground in Aroostook, blueberry barrens Downeast, and dairy and hay operations statewide — a large installed base of skid steers and compact track loaders running rubber tracks through wet-dry cycling, rocky soil and short, intense seasons.
Snow, Ice and Municipal Fleets
Long winters put town, county and contractor fleets on pavement for months. Plow cutting edges, grader blades and pads are high-turnover items, and the season doesn't leave room for a backorder. Order ahead of it, not into it.
